We’re incredibly proud to share that our long-term volunteer, Marie Dawson, has been recognised in the BBC Make A Difference Awards by BBC Radio Newcastle.
Marie’s commitment to supporting her community is truly inspiring, and this recognition in the Volunteer Award category is a true reflection to her dedication, compassion and kindness.
Marie retired in 2020 with the goal of dedicating her time to charity work. In 2022, she discovered Love, Amelia through a Women’s Institute meeting and felt an immediate calling to help make a difference for children in the community. Since then, she has become an essential part of our team, volunteering each week to support children and families in need.
Marie’s volunteer work extends beyond Love, Amelia—she also lends her time to St Benedict’s Hospice shop and the Sunderland library’s “Books at Home” programme, delivering books to children who might otherwise go without.
Speaking to BBC Newcastle Radio, Marie shared her motivation for volunteering, saying:
“I feel proud that I can do something to help,” and encourages others to join in, “If anyone wants to do charity work, do it. It’s amazing.”
She reflects on the joy and pride she finds in her role:
“Knowing that me, sorting those clothes out and putting them into a bundle, knowing it is going to a child who has nothing…it’s amazing, the feeling you get. I feel humble I can help out, but also proud knowing there is something I can do to help them.”
Marie’s dedication has not only been a source of community support but also personal fulfillment, enhancing her mental well-being as she gives back.
