Love, Amelia has joined a growing coalition of more than 100 organisations from across the North East in a united call for the Government to scrap the two-child limit in Universal Credit at the upcoming Autumn Budget.
Co-ordinated by the North East Child Poverty Commission, the letter has been sent to the Chancellor and all North East MPs. It sets out the urgent need to end a policy that is pushing thousands of children into hardship and widening inequalities across our region.
We are strongly supportive of this collective call. The two-child limit now affects around 70,000 babies, children and young people in the North East alone, and every day it remains in place a further 109 children across the country are pulled into poverty. We see the consequences of this first-hand. Families already facing significant pressure are left without enough to meet their children’s basic needs, placing further strain on local services and community organisations.
Ending the two-child limit would be a vital first step for the forthcoming national child poverty strategy and would make an immediate difference to families right across the North East.
